Intro

In September 2024 PSE ran its first internal hackathon called Hacking PSE. This was a week-long hackathon where PSE members were encouraged to work on building interesting projects using PSE technologies (and more).

MACI Platform was used to determine the winners of the hackathon. No pool funds were distributed, but winners received unique shirts, extra time off and a small cash prize. All members of PSE and EF were able vote on projects that successfully submitted a valid application before the submission deadline.

Timeline

Hacking: September 2-7, 2024

Project Submissions: September 7-9, 2024

Voting: First poll September 9-12, second poll (due to bug fix) September 16-19

The round run for a week after the hackathon, and was extended due to a bug being found in production halfway through the round. This bug resulted resulted in several votes not being counted, thus we thought it would be best to start a new poll to give everyone the time to resubmit their ballot.

Project application criteria

Teams were made up of PSE members, PSE/EF grantees and members of the Ethereum Foundation only. Each team was required to have at least 1 full time PSE member on it.

In order to submit an application to be part of the voting round, one would have needed to be in a team with a PSE or EF member, with access to a @pse.dev or @ethereum.org email address. Furthermore, applications were only accepted till the last day of the hackathon on September 7.

Gatekeeping mechanism

Both applications and voters were initially required to own a pse.dev or ethereum.org email address. For voters, you’d then need to prove you are part of a Semaphore group, which users would automatically be added to after verifying their ownership of the aforementioned email domains.

Engagement

The voting round was publicised internally within PSE’s discord, so that members would be aware of it and help decide the hackathon winners (even if they did not participate themselves).

Furthermore, EF members were made aware via discord and face to face in the office. No public announcements about this hackathon nor voting round were made.
